Communication Therapy consists of various aspects of language including the ability to express thoughts, feelings, wants and needs, increasing understanding of language and various social aspects of language, such as interpreting non-verbal communication, engaging in appropriate conversations and maintaining social relationships. People participating in communication therapy will learn how to take part in conversations, develop turn-taking and other skills through various age-appropriate activities. Therapy is individualized to suit the needs of each person with activities for generalization of skills provided for carryover. In some instances, therapy focuses on teaching alternative means of communication such as signed speech or an augmentative communication system. Communication therapy is conducted by or under the direct supervision of a licensed, certified speech and language therapist.
